Elmer Gantry production artwork — Salvation for Sale

“I had the best damn time I’ve had at any new opera in years.”

A charismatic con man. A tent full of true believers. A gospel choir that brings down the house. Aldridge and Garfein’s two-time Grammy-winning opera is the funniest, most outrageous night at the Lobero you’ll have all year.

The Story

A disarmingly charming con man discovers that religion can be the most lucrative — and entertaining — business of all.

Set in the American heartland of the 1920s, Elmer Gantry tells the story of a disarmingly charming con man who joins a traveling ministry and rises to fame as a charismatic evangelist. The opera follows Gantry’s entanglement with the ambitious evangelist Sharon Falconer as they build a religious empire.

With a gospel and hymn-infused score that swings from foot-stomping revival numbers to soaring arias, this is opera that will make you laugh, hold your breath, and leave humming. Sung entirely in English.
